Asma Fazal (She/Her)

Primary 3 Assistant Guide
My name is Asma Aria Fazal (pronounced Us Ma). I am so excited and honored to be part of this amazing community! This is my second year at Athena. I absolutely love working at Athena! It's my second home. My home away from home.

I am so lucky to have started my journey at Athena as a guide in Primary 4 and to have been part of one of the most amazing team duo’s at Athena, Lisa and Lynda. I am so very grateful and blessed to have them in my life!

I was born and raised in Birmingham, England (just like in the Netflix show, Peaky Blinders). I am half Syrian and half Afghani. My family moved to Chicago, Illinois when I was 10 years old. I am the eldest of four, with a sister and two brothers. I graduated from high school really early and then, my family moved to Saudi Arabia where I taught for a few years.

I moved to Austin a few years ago. I am currently working on my Bachelors/Masters in Speech Language Pathology at Texas State University. Before I came to Athena I was a second grade teacher at an Austin charter school.

I am a Muslimah (a Muslim woman) and I am also a Muhajibah (a Muslim woman who wears a Hijab, the scarf on my head) as part of my religion, Islam. In Islam, Muslim women are considered precious treasures and what do we do when we have a treasure or in this case are a treasure? We cover it and protect it. That’s what my Hijab does for me, it protects me. The Hijab or Niqab (veil) is only worn in front of men that are not your family and not in front of women or children. If you have any questions or are just curious please don’t hesitate to ask me anytime.

My journey at Athena continues as I join another amazing team duo, Drew and Tiffany in P3. I am so excited to work with them and to learn from them! I am beyond excited to get to know and love the sweetest little Falcons ever!

In my free time, I love to read books, manga, watch anime, listen to music, workout, and watch all my favorite shows. I am currently watching The Last of Us. I look forward to another amazing year full of love, hugs, kindness, caring, learning and growing with the kiddies!

With lots of love,
Asma
