Dear Families,
I am honored to be welcoming you to what has become like a second home to me. Athena holds a special place in my heart, as do all the families and children that have made Athena such a special place to be. I met Lisl in the spring of 2006 just before she purchased this beautiful place although in the early days we use to refer to it simply as “the property.” By the end of our first meeting, I was sold on the vision she held for Athena and committed myself to help bring this vision to life. Now entering our fifth year I’m honored to have witnessed the amazing growth and transformation this community has undergone. It truly is a magical place!
I am originally from Phoenix, Arizona, and although most of my family is still there, I have made myself a home in Austin and have now lived here officially for eleven years!
I received my Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Linguistics from the University of Arizona in 1998 and from there moved on to tutoring pre-school and early elementary children in East Austin through AmeriCorps. It was then that I realized my passion for working with young children and I have since been privileged to guide them as a tutor, a teacher, a nanny, and finally, as a Montessori guide. I discovered Montessori as part of my work through St. Edward’s where I received my Master’s in Educational Psychology last December. I have also since received my certification in Infant and Toddler Montessori Education through the North American Montessori Center. I fell in love with the Montessori philosophy as its core components of grace and courtesy, respect and care of self and the environment and, above all, reverence and awe of the young child resonate with my soul and I am grateful every day to have found a line of work which fuels my passion and inspires me on a daily basis.
Although I love going to school, I have learned more from the children than I have ever learned from a textbook and they have changed my life in ways that I never imagined possible. They are honest, eager, curious, genuine and playful. Above all, they have an immense capacity for love and such an immense sense of wonder, I am inspired to continually follow their lead.
I know that choosing your child’s first school is a huge decision and, for that reason, I am honored and grateful that you have chosen to be a part of our community. I am committed to continual learning and constant growth both professionally and personally. As such, I will always strive to create an environment which best suits the evolving needs of your child and will always challenge myself to learn more so that I can best serve your child’s developmental needs. I also greatly honor your role in this process as you are and will always be the most important teacher in your child’s life. As such, I look forward to getting to know you better this year and I especially look forward to falling in love with your child.
Ms. Laura
