Greetings Athena Community,

My journey at Athena began in the summer of 2010, when I initially came to observe the Pre-Primary class.  Within a short time, I was substituting and by the end of that week Lisl invited me to join Miss Keyla in P3 for the end of summer camp. It was and is now my pleasure to be getting to know and become a continuing part of this ever- growing community.

Although my hometown is Reading, Pennsylvania, Texas has been my home sweet home for the last 22 years. Austin is the place of birth for my daughter Marley (17), and my son JoJo (14). Along with raising my children came my desire to learn and develop my skills for conscious parenting in as many forms as possible. Including assistant to the chef at Casa de Luz, opening a Registered Home Care (1994-1995), guide at Starbright Preschool (1995-1998) and on to The Montessori Center in 2000. My son began school there and I progressed from substituting (2 yrs) onto Assistant alongside Mandy Waid in the Primary class (2 yrs) and finally received my Birth-Three training and certification through NAMC to become Co-lead Guide in the Pre-Primary 2-3 yrs class (7yrs).  Prior to my years as a parent and developing guide for young children, I spent the years of 1989-90 as a live-in nanny for 2 different families.

Most of my adult life I have been actively involved in the lives of children, families and schools.  I look forward to further pursuing my quest of growth and love through you and your children at Athena for the upcoming adventure of summer camp in June and continuing on to the sweet endeavor of joining Miss Keyla once again, in opening the new Pre-Primary class in the fall of 2011.

One of the reasons I enjoy spending time with young children is my drive to support them in their “conquest of independence” as Montessori would say.  I feel this is significant in their development to be able to feel autonomy in life, expressed as a sense of self, and to find inspiration to move forward onto the next task or opportunity in life. This is why I continue everyday to provide care in a nurturing environment for children to grow, with respect for self and others. The simple everyday routines, if kept with utmost consistency can bring about an inner peace that will carry the child through difficulty with resilience. That is my hope!

My other interests include studying, nutrition, swimming, biking, travelling and yoga. I also enjoy sharing my love of yoga with children, which I have done in practicing and teaching this art, for the past 10 years. I have received several certifications; Kundalini, as taught by Yogi Bhajan (200 hrs), Hatha from Dharma Yoga (200hrs), The Radiant Child Level One, and Mini Yogis for the Young Child (10 hrs).

Thank you for welcoming me to your wonderful community, I can’t wait to share in the responsibility and joy of raising your children with you!

Graciously,
Carla Ketter
